Submissions Demographics

Subtitle: Why so many American White Men get rejected


Our Submissions are closed, and I have started sorting out our inventory to tacle to narrow down our list of stories for final consideration! The largest demographic of writers submitting were by far white men from the US, in contrast the diversity of writers from around the world. The. number of white women from the US was only a fraction of the number of men who sent us stories! It is interesting because of the anger white men have about feeling replaced, but honestly, they are their own worst competition.
Early on I had some weaer stories from this demographic of writer. When we reached a deep bench of 35 stories, at the end of February, I wanted to accept a handful out of that group to feature to show interest about the talent we did have. It was difficult for me to narrow down 9 of that group. However, some of these weaer stories were not even emong those considered. In March when even stronger writers came in, particularly in this category, directors, scriptwriters, and people published in the Saturday Evening Post, by PRH, Pushcart prizes. The ones who weren't even interesting to me for the first round - there was no way they were going to stand up against the new stronger talent that was flooding in.

When I loo at the overall demongraphics, I wonder who exactly they are angry at for "replacing them." There were maybe 8 women from the US total. Three were in our first group accepted: Shannon, Anne, and Leoma. Out of the remaining authors, there are one or two stories that stand out. One of the women who submitted withdrew her story because it was picked up, again, by the Saturday Evening Post, leaving them as our biggest competition, and I am not at all mad about that!

I have enough authors from around the world to fill an anthology volume on it's own, and several of those are also white men. I have a white man from Ireland, a white man from Australia, a white Austrian man in Germany, and a few white men in Scotland. The reality is that when I have 40 white men who send me stories, which is around 50%, the group who are going to get the most rejections are that group! It is just math. If I have one writers in Indonesia, only one writer can be accepted or rejected from that group.

Now for the fun part! Let's see these amazing demographics! Because I hit the jacpot. Let me go around the world with you to discover where our submissions few in from:
Belarus (I requested Eastern European), Queer writer in Denmark, Odessa Ukraine, Poland, Paris France, Bolivian in German, woman and man each from Spain, American woman in Scotland, German woman in Scotland (I admit a bias here!), Austrian from Canada in Berlin, Chinese Canadian, Peruvian born man in Canada, Indonesia, Phillipino living in Japan, a few American men in Japan, two men in India.
We have more stories from white men in the US from the rest of the world combined. Think about that.
Who can you be angry about? Maybe the other white men in the US who are better than you? That would make the most sense, because they are bringing a similar point of view as you, but more creative or better writers. It is not that your point of view does not matter, but someone else represented it better. The people with different points of view are not the ones taking your place.
This globally minded editor is THRILLED that I might be able to take you around the world in one book. I regret that there is a large continent where we didn't have any writers sending us stories, but it was not for lack of trying. Throughout our submissions call, I was asing for minority voices. We have some incredible disabled writers who answered my call for that group, and several queer writers, again from all over the world - which is amazing! AGAIN, I want to say THANK YOU!
